The new Hutchinson Toro is basically an evolution of the Bulldog, albeit with rounder profile and directional centre knobs. It sports Hardskin technology, for improved puncture resistance, and raised rubber ribs on inside of the tyre to support the tyre casing. Each knob has small recesses to reduce weight and allow the knob to flex. We thought these would cause the tyre to clog more easily, but in fact that wasn’t the case.

 

Being a dual-compound design, the side knobs on the Toro are made from a softer rubber than the central tread, which explains why the Toro doesn’t ping off embedded rocks but still rolls quickly. As you’d except from an all-rounder, cornering grip isn’t as a good as a dedicated mud tyre, but even with its tendency to drift, the Toro never washed out unexpectedly, and if Hutchinson can deliver production tyres of same standard as our prototype, the Toro could be one of the most popular tyres that it has ever made.
